This air fryer pizza garlic bread has quickly become our most requested snack — and for good reason. It’s garlic bread reinvented: a crusty French loaf filled with a creamy mushroom bechamel, a hit of pizza sauce, gooey mozzarella and briny olives. The filling takes about 10 minutes to prepare and the air fryer crisps everything in under five minutes.

We make this for movie nights, casual get-togethers, or whenever a craving hits. If you enjoyed our dominos-style garlic breadsticks, you’ll love this pizza-inspired version.

Ingredients for Air Fryer Pizza Garlic Bread

French bread: Half a loaf, sliced lengthwise. Its sturdy crust crisps up nicely in the air fryer.

Mushrooms: Thinly sliced, they form the base of the creamy filling.

Pizza sauce: Mixed into the bechamel to give the filling classic pizza flavor.

Milk and all-purpose flour: Combined to make a quick bechamel that binds the filling and adds creaminess.

Mozzarella cheese: Grated and sprinkled on top for a melty finish.

Black olives: Sliced and scattered over the cheese for a salty contrast.

Garlic: Finely chopped and sautéd at the start for aroma and depth.

Italian seasoning: For that familiar herb-forward, pizza-shop aroma.

Oil: Olive oil or any neutral cooking oil for sautéeing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use regular bread instead of a French loaf?
You can, but French bread works best because its crust holds up in the air fryer and creates a crisp base. Softer breads like sandwich bread or brioche are more likely to become soggy under the filling.

Can I make this in the oven instead of an air fryer?
Yes. Preheat the oven to 200°C and bake for 8–10 minutes until the cheese melts and the bread crisps. The air fryer is faster and usually yields a crisper result, but the oven works well too.

Can I add other toppings?
Absolutely. Bell peppers, corn, jalapeños, onions, or shredded chicken all work. Avoid overloading the bread so the filling cooks evenly.

Can I use store-bought pizza sauce?
Yes — any good-quality store-bought pizza sauce is fine here.

Richa’s Top Tips

  • Spread the filling on the bread just before air frying. If assembled too early the bread absorbs moisture and becomes soggy. Keep the filling ready and assemble at the last minute.
  • Create shallow indentations in the bread with a spoon before filling. Small pockets help the filling stay in place and prevent it from sliding off while cooking.
  • Don’t overcook the flour when making the bechamel. Sautéing the flour for about a minute removes rawness. Overcooking makes it bitter and affects the whole filling.

Storage Tips

  • The filling: Can be made ahead and stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days, so you can assemble and air fry quickly.
  • Assembled bread: Do not store once assembled — the filling will make the bread soggy. Assemble right before air frying.
  • Leftovers: Reheat leftover slices in the air fryer at 180°C for 2 minutes to restore crispness. Avoid the microwave, which makes the bread chewy and cheese rubbery.

Serving Ideas

This air fryer pizza garlic bread is delicious on its own, but it also pairs well with:

  • Tomato soup: For dunking and comfort, cheese-laden garlic bread with warm tomato soup is a classic combo.
  • White sauce pasta: Serve alongside a creamy pasta for a hearty Italian-style meal at home.
  • Mocha lava cake: For a movie-night menu, start with the garlic bread and finish with a warm, gooey dessert.

Did You Know?

The bechamel used here is one of the five “mother sauces” in classical French cooking. Made simply from flour, fat and milk, it acts as a creamy binder in this recipe, keeping the mushrooms and pizza sauce together and preventing the filling from drying out in the air fryer.

  • ¾ cup thinly sliced mushrooms
  • ½ teaspoon all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons pizza sauce

  • 2 tablespoons black olives, sliced

Instructions

  • Heat oil in a pan, add garlic and sauté briefly until fragrant.
  • Add mushrooms and sauté 2–3 minutes until cooked.
  • Add flour and cook, stirring continuously for about a minute to remove rawness. Do not overcook the flour.

Notes

  1. Spread the pizza filling on the bread only just before air frying to prevent sogginess.
  2. You can prepare the filling in advance and assemble just before air frying for the best hot servings.
