So, why not pour yourself a glass of your favorite vino, settle into your most comfortable chair, and allow me to transport you with my storytelling? It’s time for some delightful moments!
Just last weekend, we embarked on an unforgettable visit to the esteemed Grover Zampa Vineyards nestled amidst the picturesque Nandi Hills. If you’ve ever yearned to deepen your appreciation for wine, this is a pilgrimage you absolutely must undertake! It’s truly astonishing to witness the intricate process involved in crafting that perfect glass of wine – from the meticulous selection of the finest grapes to the delicate dance of fermentation, the patient art of aging, and finally, the precise bottling that ensures every single pour is nothing short of perfection. We had the privilege of observing the entire fascinating journey, firsthand. From plump grapes still clinging to their vines, basking in the sun, to the sorting tables where only the most pristine fruit is chosen. We even glimpsed into the hallowed halls housing towering stacks of oak barrels, each cradling future vintages in serene slumber. This immersive experience offers a profound respect for the craft and dedication behind every bottle.

Naturally, we didn’t leave empty-handed! Our return journey was sweetened by several bottles of our newly discovered favorite wines. And we knew they were favorites because we had the delightful task of sampling many during our visit! This trip was a revelation for me, as I finally learned to genuinely appreciate white wines, a stark contrast to my long-standing preference for reds. Among our selections, we brought home the exquisite La Reserve, a harmonious blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, celebrated for its robust character and elegant finish. The Art Collection Viognier joined our haul, a wonderfully fruity and crisp white wine perfect for warm evenings. And, of course, no visit would be complete without the Art Collection Merlot, a classic choice for anyone, like us, who holds a special fondness for a truly good, smooth Merlot. These wines promised many evenings of enjoyment and inspired a wave of culinary experimentation in my kitchen.

Since our vineyard adventure, my afternoons have been joyfully dedicated to experimenting with new wine-infused recipes. After all, such fine wines deserve to be both savored and creatively incorporated into delicious concoctions. And throughout this delightful culinary journey, this Summer Berry Red Wine Spritzer has been my steadfast companion! It’s an exceptionally light, crisp, and utterly refreshing cocktail that makes it absolutely perfect for a leisurely brunch or a relaxing evening unwind. If, like me, you’ve grown a little weary of the ubiquitous Sangria, then you are absolutely going to adore these spritzers. They offer a delightful change of pace, delivering a vibrant burst of flavor without the heavier feel of traditional wine punches.
In fact, these spritzers bear a striking resemblance to the popular Spanish summer drink, Tinto de Verano, offering a similar refreshing profile with a delightful twist.
What is a Tinto de Verano?
The Tinto de Verano, literally translating to “red wine of summer,” is a quintessential Spanish refreshment. At its core, it’s a wonderfully simple and utterly delicious blend, typically comprising one part red wine and one part a carbonated mixer, most commonly lemon-lime soda or gassy lemonade. Its beauty lies in its unpretentious nature and straightforward preparation, making it a beloved choice for casual gatherings and warm weather enjoyment across Spain. While the traditional version is fantastic, I personally find myself drawn to a slightly more nuanced rendition where red wine is gently combined with a lightly sweetened lemonade. This variation strikes a perfect balance, creating an ideal sweet yet tart cocktail that is incredibly invigorating on a balmy summer’s day. It offers a subtle complexity that elevates the experience, making each sip a refreshing delight.
And What’s a Wine Spritzer?
As I mentioned, a wine spritzer shares a kindred spirit with the Tinto de Verano, both being delightful combinations of wine and carbonated soda. However, the classic wine spritzer often leans towards a slightly more wine-dominant ratio, typically two parts wine to one part carbonated soda. This ratio allows the nuances of the chosen wine to shine through while still enjoying the effervescent lift of the mixer. The beauty of a wine spritzer lies in its incredible versatility. While soda water or club soda is the traditional carbonated component, you are absolutely encouraged to get creative and customize your drink. Consider adding a touch of honey for natural sweetness, a squeeze of fresh lime juice for a zesty kick, or even a handful of fresh berries to infuse vibrant fruit flavors. For those who prefer a sweeter spritzer without the added honey, swapping out plain soda for Sprite or 7-Up is a popular and delicious alternative. The golden rule here is simple: more wine if you desire a stronger flavor! This type of cocktail is not only wonderfully light and refreshing, but it can also be a mindful choice for those tracking their caloric intake, as it naturally reduces the alcohol content per serving compared to a straight glass of wine. And if you truly love a more potent cocktail, don’t hesitate to adjust the wine to soda ratio to a generous 3:1, allowing the wine’s character to truly take center stage.

So, now that you’re well-acquainted with these delightful concoctions, tell me – are you a dedicated Summer Berry Red Wine Spritzer enthusiast, or does your heart still beat for a classic Sangria? I’ve definitely discovered my allegiance lies with the spritzer, and if you share that sentiment, then we are certainly kindred spirits! Here’s to a wonderful Friday, and as always, please remember to drink responsibly and savor every moment.

Ingredients
- 2-3 Strawberries, stems removed and cut into half
- 4-5 Blueberries
- 1/2 teaspoon Honey
- Juice of half a lime
- 2 parts Red Wine (e.g., Merlot or Shiraz)
- 1 part Carbonated Soda (club soda or lemon-lime soda)
- Sprig of mint, for garnish
Instructions
-
In a tall glass, add a few cubes of ice. Place the halved strawberries and fresh blueberries into the glass. Drizzle in the honey and squeeze in the juice of half a lime. Muddle gently with a spoon or muddler to release the berry flavors and combine with the honey and lime.
-
Pour in two parts of your chosen red wine (approximately 4 oz for a standard serving, adjusting based on glass size). Stir everything again to ensure all the flavors are well integrated. Finally, top the glass with one part carbonated soda (approximately 2 oz). Garnish with a fresh sprig of mint for an aromatic finish and enjoy your perfectly crafted Summer Berry Red Wine Spritzer!
Notes
- Feel free to experiment with the ratio of wine to carbonated soda. For a stronger drink, increase the wine to soda ratio to 3:1.
- If you prefer a sweeter spritzer and wish to omit honey, simply use a lemon-lime soda like Sprite or 7-Up instead of plain carbonated soda.
- I used a delightful Merlot for these spritzers, which offered a smooth and fruity base. However, a robust Shiraz would also be an excellent choice, adding a different layer of complexity. Experiment with your favorite red wines to find your perfect match!
- Consider chilling your ingredients beforehand for an extra crisp and refreshing cocktail experience.
- For an elevated presentation, rim your glass with sugar or add extra whole berries to the bottom before muddling.
