If you want a tofu recipe that’s easy, tasty, and perfect for weeknights, this Crispy Chili Tofu is it. Crisp tofu tossed in a glossy, spicy sauce captures the beloved street-style Indo-Chinese flavor in a healthier home-cooked version.

Crispy Chili Tofu delivers crunchy tofu pieces coated in a savory, slightly sweet, and spicy sauce. The tofu is air-fried until golden and then combined with a quick Indo-Chinese style stir-fry made with garlic, bell peppers, schezwan and soy sauces, and a cornflour slurry to thicken the gravy. The result is a satisfying dish that works as a main with rice or noodles, or as a hearty filling for wraps and rice paper rolls.
I first developed this as a paneer chilli alternative for a family dinner, and it quickly became a favorite. It pairs especially well with veg fried rice for a classic, simple meal, but also goes great with hakka noodles or plain steamed rice. You can make it fully vegetarian by swapping oyster sauce and chicken stock for vegetarian alternatives or water.

Ingredients for Crispy Chili Tofu Recipe
Tofu: Use extra-firm tofu so it holds its shape and gets a good bite after air-frying.
Spices: White pepper and Kashmiri red chilli powder add heat and aroma without overpowering the dish.
Cornflour: A coating of cornflour keeps the tofu light and crunchy; a little cornflour mixed with water thickens the sauce.
Oil: Choose a neutral oil with a high smoke point such as sunflower or groundnut oil for frying and stir-frying.
Sauces: A combination of schezwan or chili sauce, light soy sauce, and oyster sauce creates the classic Indo-Chinese flavor. Vegetarian options can replace oyster sauce with mushroom or vegetarian oyster sauce.
Vegetables: Use cubed bell peppers—red and green give color and crunch, but any color will work.
Garlic: Finely chopped garlic adds depth and fragrance to the stir-fry.
Stock: Chicken stock adds richness; swap with vegetable stock or water to keep the dish vegetarian.
Spring onion greens: Used as a fresh, crunchy garnish.
Salt and sugar: Season and balance the savory and spicy flavors.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Paneer is a great substitute and works well with the same seasoning and sauce. It will give a richer, creamier texture compared to tofu.
Absolutely. Chilli chicken follows the same flavor profile and technique, substituting tofu with bite-sized pieces of chicken.
No. If you don’t have an air fryer, shallow-fry the coated tofu in oil over medium-high heat until golden and crisp. Drain on paper towels before adding to the stir-fry.
Use vegetarian oyster sauce or mushroom stir-fry sauce and replace chicken stock with vegetable stock or water. This preserves the balance of savory and sweet flavors.

Richa’s Top Tips
- Choose firm tofu. Firm or extra-firm tofu holds up better during coating and frying and delivers the right texture for Indo-Chinese dishes.
- Handle gently. Turn pieces carefully when air-frying or shallow-frying so the cornflour coating stays intact.
- Add tofu at the end. Toss fried tofu into the sauce only after it has thickened so the pieces remain crisp instead of going soggy.
- Mise en place. Have sauces, vegetables, and slurry ready before you start stirring—the sauce comes together quickly.
Storage Tips
- Best eaten fresh: Crispy chili tofu is at its best immediately after cooking while the tofu is still crisp.
- Store separately: If you expect leftovers, keep the fried tofu and the sauce separate in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to two days.
- Reheating: Re-crisp tofu in an air fryer or oven at around 180°C for a few minutes, warm the sauce separately, then combine just before serving.
- Avoid freezing: Freezing and thawing can change the tofu’s texture and make it spongy, so freezing is not recommended.
Serving Ideas
- With fried rice: Serve with veg, chicken, or egg fried rice for a satisfying restaurant-style meal at home.
- With noodles: Pair with chilli garlic or hakka noodles for a spicy, saucy Indo-Chinese dinner that mixes textures—crispy tofu, crunchy veg, and chewy noodles.
- Rice bowl: Spoon the tofu over steamed basmati rice and stir-fried vegetables, top with extra spring onions for a simple, filling bowl meal.

This Crispy Chili Tofu recipe is a straightforward way to recreate authentic street-style Indo-Chinese flavors at home in a cleaner, healthier format. Air-frying reduces oil while still delivering a crisp exterior and satisfying texture. The quick sauce is bold and balanced—perfect for busy weeknights or casual dinners.

Prep: 10 mins Cook: 10 mins Total: 20 mins Servings: 4
Equipment
- Air fryer (or a skillet for shallow frying)
Ingredients
For tofu marination
- 400 grams extra-firm tofu, cut into 1-inch cubes
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon white pepper powder
- 1 teaspoon Kashmiri chilli powder
- 2 teaspoons neutral oil
- ½ cup cornflour for coating
For stir-fry
- 2 tablespoons neutral cooking oil
- 1 tablespoon finely chopped garlic
- Whole dried red chillies, to taste (optional)
- ¼ cup cubed red bell pepper
- ¼ cup cubed green bell pepper
- 1 tablespoon schezwan or chilli sauce
- 1 tablespoon light soy sauce
- 2 teaspoons oyster sauce (use vegetarian alternative if desired)
- ½ teaspoon sugar
- ¾ cup chicken or vegetable stock
- 1 teaspoon cornflour + 1½ teaspoons water (slurry)
- ½ cup spring onion greens, cut into 2-inch pieces
Instructions
- In a bowl, gently toss the tofu with salt, white pepper, chilli powder, oil, and cornflour until evenly coated. Let marinate for 5–10 minutes.
- Preheat the air fryer to 200°C. Place tofu in a single layer, brush lightly with oil, and air fry at 200°C for 10 minutes. Flip gently and air fry another 2–3 minutes until golden and crisp. Remove and set aside.
- Heat 1 tablespoon oil or sesame oil in a wok or large pan. Add garlic and dried red chillies and sauté briefly until fragrant. Add bell peppers and stir-fry on high heat for a few seconds to retain crunch.
- Add schezwan sauce, soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, and stock. Stir to combine and bring to a simmer.
- Whisk cornflour into water to make a smooth slurry; add to the pan while stirring to avoid lumps. Cook 2–3 minutes until the sauce thickens to a glossy consistency.
- Gently fold the fried tofu into the sauce and toss just until pieces are coated. Garnish with spring onion greens and serve immediately.
